Katt Williams faces battery charges

Comedian Katt Williams was taken into custody in Georgia on April 27 after a fight at a restaurant shortly after 10 p.m. Allegedly, Williams' family began arguing with restaurant staff after being told that the area where they had seated themselves was reserved for another party. Police say Williams then arrived and threw a salt shaker at the manager. He was detained at a nearby Waffle House, charged with battery and released shortly after midnight.

Williams has been in trouble with police prior to this as well. In March, he was charged with disorderly conduct after a fight at an apartment complex. At the end of February, a pool supply store employee claimed Williams punched him, and the actor and comedian was charged with battery.

The day before that incident, Williams allegedly threatened a bodyguard while another person beat and choked the bodyguard. Williams was charged with false imprisonment, possession of marijuana, aggravated assault and making terroristic threats. His attorney said that he is targeted because he is a celebrity and that the allegations cannot be trusted.

A person who is facing charges for violent crimes such as battery may want to have the assistance of defense counsel to combat them. If the person's civil rights were violated during the investigation or when the person was taken into custody, some evidence or the entire case might be dismissed. A person might be associated with an incident primarily on the basis of an eyewitness account, and since these may be unreliable, an attorney might introduce doubt about its accuracy.
