Life sentenced handed down for habitual DUI/DWI offender

Recently, there was a national story about a man sentenced to life in prison for pleading guilty to DWI/DUI. At first read, it might seem like a rather extreme consequence for a drunk driving charge. The severity, however, is due to the fact that this is not his first, or even third, conviction – he’s a nine-time offender.

While an extreme example, this case illustrates the steep penalties that can come from DWI/DUI convictions. In fact, in Georgia, even first time offenses could lead to up to a year in jail. Other penalties include a suspended license for up to a year and up to $1,000 in fines. A fourth offense results in a felony conviction, with up to five years in state prison.

In Georgia, not only do you have to proceed in criminal court, you also have to deal with the Georgia Department of Driver Services for license suspension issues. Essentially, you have to deal with the penalty process in two different courts, which becomes time consuming and stressful. It’s critical, however, to remember that a charge of drunk driving doesn’t necessarily mean a conviction. Whether it’s your first offense or your ninth, it’s critical to have an experienced and aggressive DUI attorney on your side who knows the ins and outs of your local court system.

A criminal record could prevent you from getting a job. A suspended license might mean you lose the job you have. Undoubtedly, DUI convictions will have a major impact it on your life, and the more DUIs you have, the worse it can get.
