6-month investigation leads to marijuana-related arrests

Criminal charges involving marijuana can carry significant penalties, particularly when they involve trafficking of the drug. Two Georgia men are facing such charges after a six-month-long multi-agency investigation led to their arrest this month. The investigation was a partnership of the Georgia State Patrol and the Georgia Bureau of Investigation with assistance from the Rome Police Department.

Undercover officers reportedly purchased marijuana from one of the men at his home. They executed warrants on that home and two other homes in Rome after suspicious activity was reported at those locations. A 35-year-old man is facing both trafficking and distribution charges, while a 57-year-old has been charged with trafficking.

According to officials, officers found some 14 pounds of marijuana as well as distribution packaging materials. According to the GBI, their agents found two firearms and almost $128,000 in cash.

Possession of even small amounts of marijuana is a crime in Georgia. A University of Georgia football player was recently arrested and charged with possessing less than an ounce of marijuana. That's a misdemeanor offense. Besides the potential criminal penalties, the player was required to sit out for one game under UGA's Substance Abuse Policy Offense Guidelines.

Even though many people consider marijuana a harmless drug, state law enforcement officials and prosecutors take offenses involving it seriously. Further, if a young person faces marijuana charges, they can impact his or her academic career as well as future job prospects. That's why it's essential to have experienced legal guidance to protect your rights and help mitigate the impact of a criminal charge on your life.
