7 men indicted on charges related to Georgia murder

Seven men were indicted on March 22 by a DeKalb County grand jury on charges related to the fatal shooting of a 23-year-old Georgia man in December 2015. Prosecutors claim the shooting death was the culmination of a violent crime spree that began four months earlier in September 2015.

According to information released by DeKalb County police, the shooting death occurred at approximately 8:30 a.m. on Dec. 26, 2015 when the 23-year-old victim returned to his apartment in Decatur. Investigators believe the seven indicted men with purported gang ties were already inside the apartment perpetrating a home invasion that began at approximately 4:30 a.m., in order to rob and pistol-whip the man's 23-year-old roommate. Two of the alleged gang members, a 23-year-old man and a 22-year-old man, are accused of murdering the victim as he entered the residence and were taken into custody by police shortly after the incident.

The other men believed to have been involved in the events leading up to the murder were indicted on various charges including home invasion, armed robbery, burglary, aggravated assault, attempted home invasion, criminal property damage and attempted armed robbery. Some of the charges also involve the robbery and non-fatal shooting of another man on Sept. 15, 2015, as well as other related robberies, burglaries and home invasions that occurred in the area from September through December.

Individuals charged with violent crimes that involve the use of a weapon, such as aggravated assault, robbery or murder typically face severe penalties and a long prison sentence if convicted. In certain cases, a criminal defense attorney might seek an agreement with the prosecutor for a reduced penalty in exchange for a guilty plea in order to avoid the cost to the state of a trial.
