Georgia psychiatrist indicted for murder after over-prescribing

Georgia authorities have detained a long-time psychiatrist who is allegedly connected to at least three patient deaths. Authorities say that they detained the practicing physician after an undercover surveillance investigation.

Detectives on the case report that the Jonesboro-based psychiatrist used his medical license to over-prescribe drugs to his patients on a regular basis. Many of the prescriptions were for narcotic controlled substances to treat pain. However, this type of treatment was prescribed outside of his normal course of practice. Additionally, the physician allegedly never asked his patients for prior medical records for MRIs, prescriptions and X-rays.

Authorities think that at least a dozen patients died from overdoses that resulted from the psychiatrist's prescriptions. They also allege that 33 other people were victims but have not died. Of the deaths, officials are charging the psychiatrist with three federal counts of murder. The murder charges are related to the deaths of a 29-year-old woman, 47-year-old woman and 49-year-old man. Each of them passed away from an overdose after going to the psychiatrist for treatment.

Additionally, the psychiatrist faces 57 other charges for the unauthorized distribution of controlled substances. Police are holding him without bond, and it is unknown whether or not he has entered a plea.

Murder is considered a violent crime, and someone who is charged with such an offense could face an uphill battle to prove that they are innocent. In such serious situations, it could be in the best interests of the defendant to seek guidance from a criminal defense attorney.
