Man indicted in deaths of Georgia college students

A man and the company that owned the truck he was driving at the time of a deadly crash on April 22 were both indicted in that crash. The wreck that took place on Interstate 16 caused the deaths of five Georgia Southern students who were on their way to clinical rotations as part of their nursing program. According to authorities, the driver was going 68 miles per hour when he collided with the car in which the students were riding.

Witnesses say that the man didn't slow down and that the wreckage was horrific. The man was charged with five counts of first degree vehicular homicide, serious injury by vehicle and reckless driving among other charges. His employer was indicted on charges of criminal responsibility of corporations as well as the serious injury by vehicle and the homicide charges. It is believed that the company will pay a fine to be absolved of its criminal culpability.

An attorney for one of the families said that the trucking company knew that the driver was a danger and that he had been recently terminated by another employer. In addition to the criminal liability that the man and his employer face, the trucking company was ordered to pay civil damages earlier in 2016. The driver who caused the crash could face up to 25 years in prison if convicted.

Those who are facing one or more felony charges should realize that there could be serious consequences if a conviction is obtained, including lengthy incarceration. They may thus find it advisable to obtain the assistance of a criminal defense attorney in developing a strategy to contest the allegations.
