Court-ordered mediation helps Uma Thurman settle custody battle

Of all the topics over which couples fight during a divorce, child custody may be the most contentious. For most people, their children take precedence over any property division or spousal support issues. And for good reason; at the end of the day, family is what matters most.

If you haven't been reading the celebrity gossip column lately, you may not have heard about the tough battle Uma Thurman and her ex-fiance have been having over their four-year-old daughter. The daughter has lived with Thurman in the years since the couple parted ways. She claims her ex isn't consistent when it comes to raising their daughter while he says she is unreasonable with her demands.

After five days of an intense trial, the judge in the case was ready to let the attorneys give their final statements but thought that it was worth giving mediation a try. After all, the child will benefit from having parents who've mutually compromised and can be amicable with one another.

The tactic worked. After a few hours with attorneys, the couple was able to agree on a parenting plan that worked for both of them and would be best for their daughter. The attorneys will come back a later date to finalize everything, but the couple is done with their contentious battle.

The lesson here is that no matter how far apart you are as a couple, it's almost always worth giving mediation a try. To find out more about mediation and child custody, you might consider speaking with an attorney.
