Is divorce the right choice for you?

If your marriage is on the rocks, you may have contemplated the idea of divorce. You probably have some expectations about divorce if you seen your parents or friends go through a split. However, seeing it second hand and experiencing it yourself are two different things. Making the decision to end the marriage is not one to be taken lightly, especially when there are children involved.

To help you with your decision, let's take a look at what divorce can do for you:

  • Divorce can determine who gets what. You and your soon-to-be-ex (or the courts) will decide who gets the house, who will keep the living room couch and who can drive away with the car. It will also divide assets like stocks, bank accounts and inheritances.
  • It can decide matters of custody and visitation. Physical custody will be decided as will a schedule for visitation. To do this, the courts will consider the best interests of the child.
  • Another function of divorce is to figure out support obligations such as child support and alimony.

However, divorce cannot guarantee that family relationships will be fixed or that the negative emotions associated with the marriage will just go away. It also doesn't serve to punish your spouse for wrongdoing or make you complete again. Some of those things will come with time and perhaps a bit of therapy.

If you have questions about how a divorce would affect your life, an attorney can answer them and he or she may be able to help you decide what's best for your situation.
