Marijuana charges can carry serious penalties

While states around the country have increasingly legalized marijuana for both recreational and medicinal use, Georgia still has laws in place against marijuana use with potentially serious penalties for those who possess, distribute or traffic it.

Georgia legislators are working to expand the number of medical conditions for which marijuana can legally be used, reduce the length of residency in the state required to be eligible for medical marijuana and allow people with medical marijuana authorizations from other states obtain certain low-THC oils here in Georgia.

A distribution or trafficking conviction could land you behind bars for years. Even possession of under an ounce of marijuana could get you as much as a decade behind bars if it's considered to be packaged for sale, as that amounts to distribution under the law.

Marijuana is still illegal under federal law. Attorney General Jeff Sessions has expressed some strong opinions about marijuana use. He has said that "good people don't smoke marijuana." He has also called it "slightly less awful" than heroin -- a statement simply not borne out by any statistics. However, Congress recently failed to provide him with the funding he sought to go after state medical marijuana laws.
