Common mistakes when it comes to child custody

The process of a custody battle can be one of the most stressful and difficult times in a parent's life. You may fear that your children will get taken away from you or that you will not be spending as much time with them as you would like. You may also worry that the other parent would not be acting in the children's best interests.

Going through a custody battle is difficult. However, every parent can become more prepared to get through it by learning about the most common mistakes made.

Do not share your plans

Putting all your cards on the table too soon can make the other side act competitively. It's important to only speak with your attorney, and consider what information you make available to the other parent. Even if you are amicable, the end result could be affected greatly by the information that you share.

Do not make it about your romantic relationship

It is all too common for a parent to try to change the course of a custody case by spilling private information about your past relationship. The focus in any custody battle should always be centered on the children, and what will be in their best interests.

Don't put words into your children's mouths

You cannot assume what your children want without letting them speak for themselves. They are their own person, and it is important that their preferences are addressed.

If you are going through a difficult custody battle, it's important to stay logical and keep the focus on what is in the best interests of your children.
