Drafting a parenting plan in Georgia

When you first start considering the possibility of a divorce or when you take the first steps of action in divorce proceedings, one of the first things that you are likely to consider is your kids and their future. Every parent wants the best for their children, so they want to ensure that they have a stable upbringing and do not suffer from the divorce.

Naturally as a parent, you will also presumably want to make sure that you spend as much time as possible with your children. You might even be seeking to gain full custody of them. Whatever you desire to gain from the custody settlement, it is important to remember that the judge will always rule in what he or she deems to be the child's best interests. This tends to be, whenever appropriate, joint custody. The following are the best places to start in initiating the process.

Draft a parenting plan

The first thing that you should do when starting to think about the future custody of your children is to draft a parenting plan alongside the other parent. A parenting plan is an informal document that gives guidelines to the way that you intend to parent together, mainly consisting of schedules and responsibilities.

A good strategy for drafting a parenting plan is for one parent to write the first draft before presenting it to the other. The other parent can then suggest amendments based on his or her preferences, and a negotiation can follow.

Going through a mature and successful custody negotiation can be difficult. It is important that you take your time as well as act with responsibility as a parent.
