How are preschoolers affected by divorce?

Divorce can be upsetting for any child, no matter how old they are. However, divorce is also a simple fact of life, and through a child's resilience they are able to grow and learn from it.

It is important to consider your child's age and personality when thinking about how you want to approach the subject of divorce with them. You may think that at the age of 3 or 4, they are simply too young to understand, but this is not the case.

Preschoolers are very intuitive and can sense when the dynamics of the family unit are shifting. Thankfully, there are some measures that you can take to make the divorce transition smoother for young children.

Offer a sense of stability

When children are used to a set routine, they can often find it difficult when this routine is disturbed. Therefore, when going through a divorce with big changes taking place, it is important that you make every effort to ensure that you child has a stable and steady routine that they can depend on.

Give your child opportunities to express their feelings

It is vital that you create safe spaces and times for your child to be able express their emotions in a safe space. You should let them know that you have their full attention and that you can answer any questions or concerns that they have.

Going through a divorce with young children is never easy, but if you concentrate on keeping life as normal as possible for them, as well as making time for yourself, it is possible to make a successful transition.
