Creating a parenting plan for your toddler

Children of different ages have differing responses to their parents' separation. Therefore, when figuring out the best way to move forward after the divorce has been finalized, it is a good idea to consider the age of your children.

When you have a child at toddler age, that is, between 18 months and 3 years, you should consider their unique needs. They are too young to understand the concept of a divorce and their parents' separation; however, they will be very sensitive to any changes in their routine.

Creating a parenting plan for a toddler

Creating a parenting plan is a great way for you and your spouse to gain control over your situation. It can determine the way that you share your time and the strategies that you put into place for good parenting.

Toddlers like to have predictable schedules, and thrive with them. Therefore, if you can devise a weekly plan that will be the same every week, it will cause minimal disruption for the child.

It is especially important to avoid exposing a toddler to emotions like anger or tension. Toddlers are very sensitive to these emotions, and it can affect them deeply. Therefore, making sure that you are on the same page with your spouse will help to ensure that there will be no disputes.

You should also modify the plan frequently. Young children develop very rapidly, and their needs change with time.

If you are working on drafting a parenting plan for your toddler, it is important to involve the other parent in all stages of the process.
