Negative communication may push you toward divorce

Communication issues really do play a role in divorce. Marriage is complicated. Couples who cannot properly communicate may not see that marriage last.

One reason that experts note is that some couples often tend to focus only on negative communication, rather than positive. This can push two people apart over time. Even minor conversations about small problems can cause issues because they make these people feel like they are working against each other, rather than working with each other.

For instance, one person may constantly act aggressively toward the other for not helping enough around the house. Saying things like "How hard is it to take out the trash when it gets full?" in the heat of the moment can really chip away at the bond between two people.

This does not mean that couples cannot talk about these issues; a lack of any communication is also a problem.

However, the way issues get addressed is the real key. The example above shows a strictly negative approach. The person could instead say something like: "I really like it when you help out around the house, and it makes my life so much easier. Thanks!"

This is a positive approach to the exact same issue. It can inspire the other person to take appropriate action -- taking out the trash, in this example -- but without damaging the relationship.

Do you feel like you and your spouse are drifting apart? Is the negative communication coming between you? If you do wind up heading toward a divorce, make sure you know what legal options you have.
