Nurse charged with forging prescriptions for opioids

A nurse in Cobb County, Georgia, is facing felony charges for forging prescriptions.

The 47-year-old woman has been charged with 93 felonies and is alleged to have written prescriptions for opioid painkillers on prescription pads she stole from a medical office where she once worked.

The woman, who lives in the Atlanta suburb of Kennesaw, was arrested by the Cherokee Multi-Agency Narcotics Squad. The squad received a tip from a local pharmacy that possibly forged prescriptions had been presented to be filled. A spokesman for the Cherokee County Sheriff's Office said a relatively brief investigation followed the receipt of the tip.

"Something about that transaction set off a red flag with the pharmacist," he told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

The investigation showed that since April 2017, the woman had taken more than 20 prescriptions to be filled at that pharmacy, according to law enforcement. The prescriptions were in both her name and in the name of another person.

The woman is alleged to have written the prescriptions for Percocet and narco, which is a mixture of acetaminophen and hydrocodone. Both are opioids.

She is believed to have filled the prescriptions for her own use and not with the intention of selling the drugs.

Each prescription she filled triggered four charges, according to police: identity fraud, forgery, obtaining a controlled substance by forgery and possession of a schedule II drug.

At the time of her arrest, she was booked at the Cherokee County Adult Detention Center and released the following day on $69,000 bond.

In cases where addiction causes someone to commit a crime – remember, this woman has not been found guilty – a chance for rehabilitation is better than a jail sentence. An attorney experienced in defending clients alleged to have committed a drug-related crime can make a case for a diversion program.
